Books and Typography
The design of books and magazines is always done with the reader in mind. We use form to bring author and reader together. Typeface, typographic grid, typography – all can be employed to purely aesthetics ends as well as for stark, streamlined information.
The outward appearance and the feel of a book are also part of the design process: size, weight, paper and cover.
Developing a grid for text, pictures, tables and graphs is particularly important. It’s a visual ”toe-hold” for the reader and gives hierarchical structure to the content. At the same time, a grid must allow enough flexibility for the design of individual pages.
Ultimately, it’s about the overall impression of a book - which is the result of innumerable small details and their relationships to one another.
